            type="person">the Austrian ambassador</rs>
                    visited the <rs ref="#mpr9441"
            type="person">grand vizier</rs> and the following
                    is a description of the progress of the visit.<ref
            target="#ftn1" type="note_reference"/>
        </ab>
        <ab xml:id="ab.9">The <rs ref="#mpr9435"
            type="person">ambassador</rs> was situated in his tent at
                    <rs ref="#mpr14713"
            type="place">Hazinedar Çiftliği</rs>. Therefore, at dawn, the agha of the palace ushers, with his
                    ceremonial turban (<foreign
            xml:lang="tr">selimi</foreign>) and ceremonial
                    cloak, mounted a horse equipped with an imperial ceremonial harness. The
                    secretary of palace ushers and the intendant of palace ushers with their
                        <foreign
            xml:lang="tr">mücevveze</foreign> (a turban of many plaited folds)
                    and ceremonial cloaks, and forty to fifty palace ushers with their <foreign
            xml:lang="tr">mücevvezes</foreign>, arrived at the aforementioned place. For
                    the <rs
            ref="#mpr9435"
            type="person">ambassador</rs>’s ride, a horse was sent
                    that was equipped with a ceremonial saddle and a silk cover. For his inner
                    circle and entourage one hundred and thirty saddled horses were sent. They took
                    the <rs
            ref="#mpr9435" type="person">ambassador</rs> and processioned to the <rs ref="#mpr9441"
            type="person">grand vizier</rs>’s palace.<ref target="#ftn2" type="note_reference"/>

            type="person">ambassador</rs> arrived and entered
                    [the palace], the members of the mad (<foreign
            xml:lang="tr">delü</foreign>) and
                    volunteer (<foreign
            xml:lang="tr">göñüllü</foreign>) corps, wearing their
                    uniforms, lined up on both sides of the courtyard of the javelin maidan that is
                    located near the old reception room by the grand vizieral palace. The aghas of
                    the palace guardsmen (<foreign
            xml:lang="tr">vācibüʾl-riʿāya aġaları</foreign>)
                    also stood at the reception room with their turbans. The gatekeepers of the <rs
            ref="#mpr9441"
            type="person">grand vizier</rs> and palace aghas, with their
                    dark sable furs and <foreign
            xml:lang="tr">mücevveze</foreign>s (a turban of
                    many plaited folds) on them, stood along the vestibule that opens to the
                    aforementioned maidan through which the cortege would enter. Above them, five to
                    ten ushers were ready to applaud. As the <rs

                    into the pavilion nearby.</ab>
        <ab xml:id="ab.11">The <rs ref="#mpr9435"
            type="person">ambassador</rs> arrived and when he had sat
                    down in the aforementioned fortress on the stool that had been prepared in front
                    of the seat of precedence (<foreign
            xml:lang="ota">ṣadr</foreign>), his highness the most excellent <rs ref="#mpr9441"
            type="person">grand vizier</rs>, wearing a <foreign
            xml:lang="tr">ḳallāvī</foreign> (a large ceremonial turban for viziers) and
                    a sable fur on a mohair cloak and around his fortunate waist a jeweled sash and
                    a jeweled dagger, [entered the room] accompanied arm in arm by the chief
                    steward, <pb

            xml:lang="tr">selīmī</foreign>) and a ceremonial fur cloak, and the chief
                    steward of the palace gatekeepers, who was wearing a <foreign
            xml:lang="tr">mücevveze</foreign> and a ceremonial fur cloak, followed by the <rs ref="#mpr14722"
            type="person">chief of the scribes</rs> and the agha of
                    palace ushers. <ref

                    grand vizier entered the room in this way] the <rs
            ref="#mpr9435" type="person">ambassador</rs> stood up and saluted the <rs ref="#mpr9441"
            type="person">grand vizier</rs>, the <rs ref="#mpr14722"
            type="person">chief of the
                        scribes</rs>, and the agha of palace ushers, upon which the master of
                    ceremonies saluted with a loud voice. As the <rs
            ref="#mpr9441" type="person">grand vizier</rs> sat down on his lofty post the palace ushers
                    applauded.</ab>
        <ab xml:id="ab.12">Next, sweets and coffee was served and the gifts brought by the <rs ref="#mpr9435"
            type="person">ambassador</rs> to the <rs ref="#mpr9441"
            type="person">grand vizier</rs> were presented. After that, when the <rs ref="#mpr9435"
            type="person">ambassador</rs> handed the letter he had
                    brought from the emperor to the <rs
            ref="#mpr9441" type="person">grand
                        vizier</rs>, the <rs ref="#mpr14722"
            type="person">chief of the scribes</rs>
                    took it and placed it on a pillow. When [the ambassador] handed the letter he
                    had brought from the chancellor as well, the <rs
            ref="#mpr14722" type="person">chief of the scribes</rs> took again and placed it on a pillow. <ref

                    Then, friendly procedures commenced. Following a half-hour long conversation,
                        <ref
            target="#ftn5" type="note_reference"/>
          <foreign
            xml:lang="tur">sherbet</foreign> (sweet drink) and
                    frankincense was served. After that, the <rs
            ref="#mpr9435" type="person">ambassador</rs> was dressed with a sable fur lined with silk, gold, and
                    silver threaded fabric which had cloak-style sleeves, while his noblemen were
                    dressed with cloaks at the same location. As the mansion was not large enough to
                    accommodate the rest of his entourage, they were dressed at the reception room
                    with a total of one-hundred and twenty kaftan.</ab>
        <ab xml:id="ab.13">Then, as a gift of the fortunate <rs ref="#mpr9441"
            type="person">grand
                        vizier</rs>, a horse that had a dark-colored face was brought to the honor
                    of the <rs
            ref="#mpr9435"
            type="person">ambassador</rs> who then processioned to
                    his location of residence. Since it was not customary for the agha of the palace
                    ushers to accompany the return cortege, he did not go but the rest went with the
                        <rs
            ref="#mpr9435" type="person">ambassador</rs>.</ab>
