Driesch’s description of the audience, the letters of Emperor Karl VI and Prince Eugene were presented to the grand vizier by members of the ambassador’s entourage, Count Carl von Bathyani and Otto Friedrich von Oebschelwitz. Report indicating the first audience of the Austrian ambassador with the grand vizier on August 4, 1719. On this day, the Austrian ambassador visited the grand vizier and the following is a description of the progress of the visit. The ambassador was situated in his tent at Hazinedar Çiftliği. Therefore, at dawn, the agha of the palace ushers, with his ceremonial turban (selimi) and ceremonial cloak, mounted a horse equipped with an imperial ceremonial harness. The secretary of palace ushers and the intendant of palace ushers with their mücevveze (a turban of many plaited folds) and ceremonial cloaks, and forty to fifty palace ushers with their mücevvezes, arrived at the aforementioned place. For the ambassador’s ride, a horse was sent that was equipped with a ceremonial saddle and a silk cover. For his inner circle and entourage one hundred and thirty saddled horses were sent. They took the ambassador and processioned to the grand vizier’s palace. Before the ambassador arrived and entered [the palace], the members of the mad (delü) and volunteer (göñüllü) corps, wearing their uniforms, lined up on both sides of the courtyard of the javelin maidan that is located near the old reception room by the grand vizieral palace. The aghas of the palace guardsmen (vācibüʾl-riʿāya aġaları) also stood at the reception room with their turbans. The gatekeepers of the grand vizier and palace aghas, with their dark sable furs and mücevvezes (a turban of many plaited folds) on them, stood along the vestibule that opens to the aforementioned maidan through which the cortege would enter. Above them, five to ten ushers were ready to applaud. As the ambassador came in this manner and arrived at the stepping-stone, the grand vizier left the mansion and went into the pavilion nearby. The ambassador arrived and when he had sat down in the aforementioned fortress on the stool that had been prepared in front of the seat of precedence (ṣadr), his highness the most excellent grand vizier, wearing a ḳallāvī (a large ceremonial turban for viziers) and a sable fur on a mohair cloak and around his fortunate waist a jeweled sash and a jeweled dagger, [entered the room] accompanied arm in arm by the chief steward, who was wearing a ceremonial turban (selīmī) and a ceremonial fur cloak, and the chief steward of the palace gatekeepers, who was wearing a mücevveze and a ceremonial fur cloak, followed by the chief of the scribes and the agha of palace ushers. [When the grand vizier entered the room in this way] the ambassador stood up and saluted the grand vizier, the chief of the scribes, and the agha of palace ushers, upon which the master of ceremonies saluted with a loud voice. As the grand vizier sat down on his lofty post the palace ushers applauded. Next, sweets and coffee was served and the gifts brought by the ambassador to the grand vizier were presented. After that, when the ambassador handed the letter he had brought from the emperor to the grand vizier, the chief of the scribes took it and placed it on a pillow. When [the ambassador] handed the letter he had brought from the chancellor as well, the chief of the scribes took again and placed it on a pillow. Then, friendly procedures commenced. Following a half-hour long conversation, sherbet (sweet drink) and frankincense was served. After that, the ambassador was dressed with a sable fur lined with silk, gold, and silver threaded fabric which had cloak-style sleeves, while his noblemen were dressed with cloaks at the same location. As the mansion was not large enough to accommodate the rest of his entourage, they were dressed at the reception room with a total of one-hundred and twenty kaftan. Then, as a gift of the fortunate grand vizier, a horse that had a dark-colored face was brought to the honor of the ambassador who then processioned to his location of residence. Since it was not customary for the agha of the palace ushers to accompany the return cortege, he did not go but the rest went with the ambassador. The gifts the ambassador brought to the most fortunate grand vizier: a chiming clock, 3 pieces a large silver basin of infidel style, 2 pieces another large silver-painted basin in infidel style with a silver pitcher, 1 piece set water bowl coated with silver and tray, 6 sets large silver coffee pitcher, 2 pieces large silver ?, with four legs and two handles, 1 piece chandelier with six candle holders, 2 pieces
