Project partners have granted the Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences permission to publish facsimile data within the QhoD project. Employees of this publically funded institution took images of archival sources or collected digitized items, and created descriptive metadata. The contents of the archival sources are not subject to copyright restrictions under Austrian law (Urheberrechtsgesetz), as the creators both of their ideal contents and their documentary material objects passed away more than 70 years ago (§§60-61 UrhG), and these materials are considered documents for official use (§7 UrhG). Decree to the commander of Khotyn, Vizier Abdi Pasha: General [Damian Hugo] Count of Virmont—may God end his days propitiously—who came to my threshold of felicity as grand ambassador from the Roman emperor sent a petition to my threshold of felicity [about the following matter]: It is written and recorded in the imperial letter of agreement (ʿahdnāme-i ḥumāyūn) given to the Roman emperor that it shall be permissible to free the captives that are found in the possession of people in an appropriate way with the payment of a potential price that is acceptable and reasonable; in case no agreement is reached with the owner of a captive and a disagreement occurs, the notables shall intermediate between the two parties. A female Christian of Hungarian origin from among the subjects of the Roman emperor, named Çoha, was captured during the battle that took place formerly. At the moment, he is the captive of a janissary, known as Bekyun, who is a member of the janissaries of the imperial court and resides in a village called Hacı Ali that is located in Khotyn. Formerly, an Austrian captain named Gasl wanted to purchase the aforesaid female Christian [captive] by paying the price. He agreed with the janissary on five hundred ġurūş and deposited a silver clock to him. Later on, he also delivered the rest of the money. [The ambassador] reported that when [the Austrian captain] wanted to leave along with the aforesaid female Christian [captive], the janissary who owned the captive withdrew from the purchase agreement and dared to treat [the captain] unjustly. The ambassador requested my imperial decree so that, in case the aforesaid janissary who is the owner of the aforesaid captive looks for an excuse not to receive the five hundred kurushes and not to hand the aforesaid captive, the captive shall be freed against a reasonable and acceptable price in accordance with the imperial letter of agreement. You are the aforesaid vizier! My illustrious edict has been issued that the owner shall be satisfied with a reasonable and acceptable price as per the conditions of the imperial letter of agreement and the captive shall be freed. So have I commanded! March 21 to March 30, 1720
