        <ab xml:id="ab.5">So is the imperial sign (<foreign>nīşān-ı hümāyūn</foreign>):</ab>
        <ab xml:id="ab.6">The ancient friendship and the state of peace between my eternal <rs ref="#mpr7118"
            type="place">sublime state</rs> and the <rs ref="#mpr9399"
            type="person">Roman Emperor Charles</rs>, the laudable pride of the
                    magnates of Christendom, was improved and the edifice of mutual confidence and
                    reliance were consolidated and made firmer. Accordingly, it is indispensably
                    necessary and required henceforward to enforce about the priests who belong to
                    the nation of Jesus — peace be upon him — and owe allegiance to the Roman pope
                    the conditions written and recorded in the imperial letters of agreement that
                    were issued during the felicitous times of my illustrious predecessors and noble
                    forefathers of exalted pedigree who sleep in heaven and during my reign and
                    times of eternal sultanate; in particular, [it is indispensably necessary and
                    required to enforce] the noblest purview of the illustrious imperial sign and
                    exalted orders granted and given as my favor and to protect and guard the
                    merchants and guests as a requirement of friendship and sincerity. Therefore, I
                    have issued this imperial, felicitous charter (<foreign xml:lang="ota">nişān</foreign>).</ab>
        <ab xml:id="ab.7">I command that, in whatever way the priests who owe allegiance to the Roman <rs
            type="person">pope</rs> and Jesuits have been visiting the church called the
                        <rs
            ref="#mpr16124"
            type="place">Church of the Holy Sepulchre</rs> since the
                    old days as per their old rituals and, in particular, in whatever way they have
                    been visiting <rs
            ref="#mpr16131"
            type="place">Mount Zion</rs>, they shall
                    [continue] their visits as before in the same way according to their rituals.
                    Contrary to the old practices that have continued to this day, they shall not be
                    interfered with or attacked by the subjects of my <rs
            ref="#mpr7118"
            type="place">sublime state</rs> or by the community of customary law
                        (<foreign
            xml:lang="ota">ehl-i ʿörf ṭāʾifesi</foreign>) with claims of money
                    or under other pretexts. Using my previously issued noble
                    order—inscribed with my royal imperial rescript—concerning the reparation of the <rs
            ref="#mpr16124"
            type="place">Church of the Holy Sepulchre</rs> as an excuse, the Greek
                    community, in opposition to the noble orders, imperial rescripts, and glorious
                    imperial signs issued during the felicitous times of former sultans, shall not
                    make any claims or dispute against those who follow the Roman <rs type="person">pope</rs>. Great care shall be taken and attention shall be paid to protect
                    and guard them and for them to be tranquil thanks to imperial protection. Thus
                    shall they know and [have confidence] in the noble mark.</ab>
