Project partners have granted the Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences permission to publish facsimile data within the QhoD project. Employees of this publically funded institution took images of archival sources or collected digitized items, and created descriptive metadata. The contents of the archival sources are not subject to copyright restrictions under Austrian law (Urheberrechtsgesetz), as the creators both of their ideal contents and their documentary material objects passed away more than 70 years ago (§§60-61 UrhG), and these materials are considered documents for official use (§7 UrhG). Decree to the provincial governor of the coastal strip of Algeria (Cezāyir-i ġarb), the dey of the janissary corps of the coastal strip of Algeria, the judge, the janissary agha and other elderly (of the janissary corps): In the letters of agreement that have been exchanged as a result of the joint signing of peace and reconciliation between my eternal sublime state and the Roman emperor, the laudable pride of the great commanders of Christendom, it is written and recorded that the merchant class of both sides shall trade safely, soundly, and quietly on the lands of both sides per the letters of agreement that were previously exchanged between the two sides. The merchants and subjects of the lands under the suzerainty of the aforesaid Roman emperor, whichever nation they come from, shall quietly come and go via land and sea to the well-protected domains under the flag and patent of the Roman emperor and trade in accordance with its conclusion among the delegations charged with this matter. It is very important and a requisite to obey the conditions and registers of my imperial letter of agreement (ʿahdnāme-i ḥumāyūn). In the way described, the merchants and subjects that quietly come and go under the flag and patent of the aforesaid Roman emperor, regardless of whichever nation they come from, shall not be interfered with, attacked, injured, or disturbed by Algerians in violation of the aforesaid imperial letter of agreement. My illustrious edict has been issued that you shall pay attention to and take great care of guarding and protecting them and obeying the conditions of the imperial letter of agreement.
