Decree to the agha of the imperial court janissaries and the chief gardener of the imperial court:

[Concerning] General [Damian Hugo] Count of Virmont—may God end his days propitiously—who came to my gate that is the center of state, as grand ambassador from the Roman emperor, the paragon of the great commanders of the community of Messiah: [The ambassador] himself and his people transport the seven thousand medres of wine to their residence that they purchased around for their own consumption as per the permission given. From now on, [as they transfer wine,] superintendents and officers shall not demand money from them under the name of customs duty, tribute, favors, outlay, or under other pretexts. No one shall prevent transportation.[1]

As my most noble edict has been issued on this matter, I ordered that: When my illustrious edict arrives, you shall act as stipulated by it; moreover, you shall not let anyone prevent the aforesaid ambassador from transporting the seven thousand medres wine that he purchased with his own money to his residence immediately as described above. From now on, you shall not have the superintendents and officers demand money under the name of customs duty, tribute, favors, outlay, or under other pretexts. You shall attend [to this matter] diligently so that there shall not be a possibility of paying [more than] the fixed amount or double that payment [annually]. So shall you know!
