Comment: | Alexander Joseph (5 April 1857 – 23 October 1893), known as Alexander of Battenberg, was the son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine (1823–1888) and Countess Julia von Hauke (1825–1885). He was also the nephew of Russia's Tsar Alexander II. He was the first Prince (Knyaz) of the Principality of Bulgaria, reigning from 29 April 1879 until 7 September 1886. After he had resigned the throne and left Bulgaria on September 8, 1886, he married Johanna Loisinger, an Austrian actress, pianist and soprano opera singer, and assumed the style of Count von Hartenau (February 6, 1889). The photograph is kept in the family album of Aleksi Popangelov. | Relations: | /o:vase.162 |
