Comment: | Ilija Garašanin (1821, Garaši – 1874, Grocka) was the son of the businessman Hadži Milutin Savić-Garašanin, a Serbian revolutionary and member of the National Council of Serbia, and of Pauna Loma, the sister of the voivode Arsenije Loma. Ilija Garašanin became a Serbian politician and statesman, serving as Minister of Home Affairs and Prime Minister (1861–1867). He is remembered for having been the first Serbian politician who had a genuine political program, designed to prevent Austrian and Russian influence in Serbia and in the remaining Slav populated parts of the Ottoman Empire. He wrote the Načertanije, a political document which stated the goals of liberating the South Slavs and unifying Serbian territories. His aim was to place Serbia in the ranks of other European states. Photograph kept in Anastas Jovanović's album. | Relations: | /o:vase.1194 |
