Comment: | Anastas Jovanović (1817, Vraca – 1899, Belgrade) has been praised as the "pioneer of Serbian photography". He was born one of three children to merchant Jovan (?–1831) and Marija Jovanović (~1795–1879, Belgrade). He studied painting, graphics, and lithography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was funded by the Serbian government under Miloš Obrenović I, Prince of Serbia. After graduating from the Academy, Jovanović was appointed Prince Mihailo Obrenović's (the son of Miloš Obrenović I, Prince of Serbia) personal photographer as well as head of Prince Mihailo's cabinet. In 1850 he exhibited his work in Serbia for the first time, leaving a lasting impression on the style of young Serbian photographers to follow. Photograph kept in Anastas Jovanović's album. |
