Comment: | Mihailo Obrenović III, Prince of Serbia (1823, Kragujevac – 1868, Belgrade), was the son of Prince Miloš Obrenović (1780–1860) and Ljubica Vukomanović (1788–1843, Vienna). Upon the abdication of his father, Mihailo ascended the throne as a minor on June 25, 1839. In 1842 he was overthrown by a rebellion led by Toma Vučić-Perišić (1787/1788-1859), which enabled the Karađorđević dynasty to accede to the Serbian throne. Mihailo was reinstated as Prince of Serbia in September 1860 after the death of his father, who had reigned in 1858. For the next eight years he ruled as an enlightened absolutist monarch. In 1868 he was shot by assassins. |
