Comment: | Marija Jovanović (~1795–1879, Belgrade) was married to merchant Jovan Jovanović, with whom she had three children, Anastas, Mihailo and Katarina. Anastas later became a prominent photographer, while his sister married Nikola Hadži Popović, a high Serbian official. Marija belonged to a highly respected family in Vraca, an important administrative and garrison city during Ottoman rule. After her husband had passed away, she went to live with her brother in Belgrade, where the latter worked as a dressmaker for Prince Miloš Obrenović. Photograph kept in Anastas Jovanović's album. |
