Catholic peasant couple in Baščaršija

Description:A Catholic peasant couple from Sarajevsko polje in Baščaršija dressed in traditional costume characterized by embroidered white shirts with wide sleeves for both sexes, and unbuttoned, short vests (fermen) with gajtan decorations. The woman’s hair is covered with a tightly fixed headscarf. She is wearing dark dimije and holding her hands folded over her belly, showing a ring on her left index finger. The man has a white čalma wrapped around his black cap, characteristic for his place of origin. He is in čakšire with a woven woollen belt (adžem pas) and a bensilah. The couple stands very close to each other, occupying the right lower quarter of the frame, but they do not touch. There is a street scene in the background and the mountains around Sarajevo on a sunny day are seen behind.
Comment:The woman is obviously pregnant. Analogue photographic process, negative-positive (Agfa Isopan 17 DIN). Original preserved as a positive on silver bromine paper, stored as a print and a digital record.
