Object:Enthusiastic greengrocer in Tophane
Description:A smiling man is waving a bundle of vegetables in each hand. He is wearing a plaid shirt and waistcoat. His hair is uncombed. There is an energetic and cheery air about him. In the background there is a row of market stands and the silhouettes of vendors are discernible.
Comment:The picture appeared in the newspaper Yeni Gün as part of a series with the title, ‘İstanbul'un Köşe, Bucağı’ (Corners and nooks of Istanbul), authored by Osman Cemal (Kaygılı). The legend reads: ‘An enthusiastic greengrocer at the Tuesday Market’. The article features the Tophane area and the Tuesday Market – an important market for products like dry goods, haberdashery, used furniture and cheap footwear. The market ceased to exist in its old form after reconstruction work to widen streets in 1958.
