Young man greeting a crowd in Galata

Description:A smiling young man, surrounded by other smiling young men and children, opens his arms in a big gesture. He seems to be accepting cheers and acclamation. There is something vaguely staged about the scene, underlined by the smile of another young man on the left, looking in the direction of the camera.
Comment:The photograph was taken in the context of Cumhuriyet news coverage of local government elections. According to the newspaper, the young man had just given a speech in front of Galata Tower advocating the ruling party in the elections that started on 5 October 1930. The elections were marked by the politically engineered creation of an opposition party in the summer the same year, the Free Republican Party, which was subsequently dissolved on 15 November 1930.
