Choking on gas

Description:In the foreground, a man in a dark jacket and trousers, a flat cap and rubber boots, is lying on the paving stones of Beyazıt meydanı, pressing a handkerchief to his mouth. He has a plate around his neck, reading: ‘Boğucu gazli’ (choking on gas). Except for him, the square is empty. The university gate and the mosque dominate the background.
Comment:The photograph was shot in the context of two articles that appeared in Cumhuriyet in August 1939 reporting on military defence operations against air raids and chemical weapons attacks. Cumhuriyet covered the military exercise in great detail, announcing which action was to take place in which part of town and at what time. The exercise on Beyazıt meydanı envisaged that an enemy squadron had dropped red and white gas bombs. Military personnel were to intervene, render first aid to the injured and transport them to medical facilities.
