Facade in the air

Description:A group of firemen wearing black uniforms and helmets have torn down the facade of a gutted wooden two-storey house with a long rope. The entire facade is in the air and just about to hit the ground. One fireman is running towards the camera, the others are attentively observing the scene.
Comment:The photograph was shot in the context of an article printed in Cumhuriyet with the title, ‘Yesterday the city once again witnessed a fire catastrophe’. The facade belonged to the of Adil Paşa and was located on Tavukçu Street. The fire broke out in the Sultanahmet district on 9 June 1934 in a house allegedly rented by a certain Fehrettin Bey. Due to strong winds, the whole neighbourhood was set alight within moments.
