Firemen in front of a burnt-out wooden house in Sultanahmet

Description:Firemen wearing black uniforms and helmets are tearing down the facade of a gutted wooden two-storey house with a long rope. In the foreground, a man is addressing a fellow fireman wearing a leather backpack showing the sign of the crescent.
Comment:The photograph was taken in the context of an article printed in Cumhuriyet with the title, ‘Yesterday the city once again witnessed a fire catastrophe’. The facade belonged to the konak of Adil Paşa and was located on Tavukçu Street. The fire broke out in the Sultanahmet district on 9 June 1934 in a house allegedly rented by a certain Fehrettin Bey. Due to strong winds, the whole neighbourhood was set alight within moments.
