Participants at the Twelfth Congress of the International Alliance of Women (IAW) in Istanbul

Description:Group portrait of women posing in front of a doorway on a sunny day. Most are wearing Western urban clothes – mid-calf dresses and hats – but a few are dressed in national costume, for example the lady in a white sari and long-sleeved blouse standing arm in arm with a tall elderly lady in the centre of the picture. Another woman in national costume is standing on the left margin of the picture. A young man in an official’s hat is peeping over the ladies’ shoulders from behind. The atmosphere is cheerful and reveals a certain sense of pride.
Comment:The photograph was taken in the context of the Twelfth Congress of the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal Citizenship (IAW), which took place in Yıldız Palace in Istanbul from 18 to 25 April 1935. More than two hundred delegates from over thirty countries attended the congress. The tall lady in the centre foreground is probably the organization's president at the time, Margery Corbett Ashby.
