| Comment: | The men who are wearing suits are probably judical officers. The photograph was published on 1 September 1931 in Yeni Gün newspaper. According to the related article, the distillery has had a production capacity of up to 150 litres of rakı per day. Illegal distilleries were a prominent topic in Istanbul in the late twenties and early thirties. In these years, the local newspapers published many articles reporting on rakı consumption and alcoholism as well as on the discovery of such production facilities – often featuring very similar photographs. |
