Object:Quran recital
Description:A man is kneeling on an intricately ornamented mosque pulpit (minbar) reciting the Quran. Next to the wooden steps leading up to the pulpit sit five men. The three to the right are wearing elegant suits, the two to the left are dressed in less formal attire.
Comment:The photograph accompanied an article in Cumhuriyet with the title, ‘People want to hear the Quran in Turkish’. The article was part of a campaign by the Ankara government to promote Quran recitation in Turkish. Growing restistance led to the abandonment of the project. The man to the right of the steps is Cumhuriyet photographer, Selahattin Giz.
