Object:Little girl watches Ramadan drummer
Description:A Ramadan drummer in a flat cap is playing the davul, looking towards the camera. A man in an official hat is standing in front of an open door, looking at the drummer. Next to him in the door, a festively dressed little girl is also watching the drummer.
Comment:The picture was published on the front page of Yeni Gün together with other photographs under the title, ‘The beautiful weather enhanced the gaiety of the holiday’, to celebrate the beginning of Ramadan. The legend reads: ‘One of the Bahşış (tip) collectors walking the neighbourhood with a drum’. Photographs of Ramadan musicians were often printed on the first day of Ramadan celebrations. They traditionally walk the streets to wake up the inhabitants in time for sahur, the last meal before sunrise and a day of fasting.
