---|---|
Description: | A Ramadan drummer is playing the davul. He is accompanied by a man in an official hat. A group of children in festive urban dress is following them down the road. An old man with a white beard crosses the group walking uphill, turning his back to the camera. |
Comment: | The picture was published on 22 Feburary 1931 in Cumhuriyet with the legend, ‘A random picture in a street taken on the first day of celebrations: A drummer and people heading for the festivities’. The Ramadan drummers traditionally walk the streets to wake up the inhabitants in time for sahur, the last meal before sunrise and a day of fasting. |
