Description Portrait of Janez Evangelista Krek. The caption below gives the dates of his birth and death. Below is another caption with an excerpt from his will (probably a quote from one of his speeches) appealing for the creation of a Yugoslav state.
CommentProduced by the Slovene paper Ilustrirani Glasnik and openly supported the creation of a Yugoslav state. Postcards like these were referred to as deklaracijske razglednice [declaration postcards] because they declared support for the May Declaration of 1917 and were produced in 1917 or 1918, near the end of the Habsburg Monarchy. The May Declaration was an open call read by the chairman of the Yugoslav Club in the Viennese parliament for the creation of a Yugoslav state within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Surprisingly, the postcard escaped government censorship.
