George Atwood
George Atwood, englischer Physiker, geboren 1745 in London, gestorben 1807 in London. Nach seiner Promotion am Trinity College der Universität Cambridge wurde er im Jahr 1776 zum Mitglied der Royal Society ernannt, im Jahr 1784 publizierte er schließlich sein Lehrbuch A treatise on the rectilinear motion and rotation of bodies, in dem er die nach ihm benannte Atwoodsche Fallmaschine beschreibt (siehe Fallmaschine nach George Atwood). Als Schüler François-André Danican Philidors widmete sich Atwood zudem intensiv dem Schachspiel und wurde Privatsekretär des damaligen Premierministers William Pitt. (S.K.)
