Bedeutung
(1853-1910)
Donald Ferguson was the Co-Proprietor and Co-Editor of the Ceylon Observer, a leading newspaper. He was an accomplished linguist and historian (Hulugalle 2004: 299). Ferguson was born in Ceylon but educated in England and had acquired a good working knowledge of Portuguese, French, German and Dutch. After returning to Ceylon, he also acquired the local languages, Sinhala and Tamil. His translations and footnotes on Portuguese works such as “The History of Ceylon, from the Earliest Times to 1600 AD, by João de Barros and Diogo de Couto” are testimony to his scholarship.
