Einleitung
Die Korrespondenz zwischen Victor Collins und Hugo Schuchardt wurde von Sarah Melker bearbeitet, kommentiert und eingeleitet.
Bedeutung
Victor Collins. Very little biographical information is available. He may be the Victor Collins described in an unidentifiable digitized genealogical source as “journalist and musical doctor, youngest son of Michael Collins, of Leamington” . This seems to coincide with what Georges Lacombe, their mutual acquaintance writes in 1911: “Collins était, quand je l’ai connu en 1905 et 1906, correspondant d’un journal anglais ou américain (je ne me souviens plus au juste).” An article on the Bonaparte library merely records: “The Princess applied to the Very Rev. Francis M. Wyndham, the Superior of the Oblates of St. Charles Borromeo, to find someone to undertake the task. He recommended Mr. Victor Collins, who had been educated at St. Charles’s College, an institution under the control of the Oblate Fathers [...].” (The Bonaparte Library 1896, p. 248). In 1894, two and a half decades before the letter from Collins, Schuchardt wrote a scathing review of his catalogue. Edward Spencer Dodgson offered Schuchardt a translation into English of this review to be published in The Academy (Dodgson 1894). However, Schuchardt turned him down. It is unknown how Collins came to know of the review, nor why he waited until 10 years after Lacombe’s letter to send his volume to Schuchardt (identified among the texts in Schuchardt’s private library).
