Dear Sir,
On receipt of your favor of Dec 20, inquiring about modifications of the Portuguese language among the negroes of Brazil, I referred it at once to General Couto de Magalhães1 one of our greatest travelers and our best authority on Indian languages. You will find his reply enclosed.2
In the absence of any work on the subject I have made inquiry for some romance or similar words in which negro characters are introduced but have so far been unable to learn of anything that would |2| serve your purpose. I remember to have seen in the newspapers occasional articles mostly of the nature of skits3 at various individuals in which an attempt was made to imitate negro phraseology. I fancy that this will be of no use to you but when I meet with them again I will send you some as example of how the negroes talk Portuguese.
If you meet Dr. Reiss4 please give him my kindest regards. I would like to have his address in order to send him some publications relating to Brazil,
