Monsieur, Je vous remercie très sincèrement des deux lettres que vous avez voulu m’adresser, ainsi comme de l’envoi de l’American Journal of Philology et je vous prie d’en remercier aussi M. le Dr. Gildersleeve1. Il est vrai, je possédais déjà l’étude de M. Harrison2 laquelle du reste repose entièrement sur les matériaux publiés par votre compatriote M. le Dr. Mercier3. Je lirai prochainement vos romans créoles; ma seule excuse de ne les connaître pas encore consiste à lire très peu de romans

3 Dr. Alfred Mercier (1816-1894), a native Louisianan physician and writer. He was concerned with the promotion of French and Creole language and culture in Louisiana. For that purpose he co-founded L’Athénée Louisianais in 1875. His later literary and philologist works implement and discuss the creole language of Louisiana (Jumonville 2002).
