Prof. Hugo Schuchardt,

My dear Sir,

Your favor of the 3rd inst. together with “Slawo-deutsches und Slawo-italienisches”1 & the short notice of the same from the Literaturblatt2 were all received today. Please accept best thanks for them.

I shall take great pleasure in noticing your work in the American Journal of Philology3 and am especially glad that you have reworked the important problem of speech mixture which was in so unsatisfactory a state before. I have long thought that this question ought to have new treatment & feel sure that most valuable light has been thrown upon it at your hands. |2| The Germans are by no means the only people with us with whom similar studies might be carried on with great profit. Nearly every people of the globe has contributed more or less to make up our extraordinarily mixed population. Our country is a perfectly virgin field in many most important studies of this kind for the philologist. You will see by the little résumé of my paper4 before the Philological Association5, in October last, what a field there is in this direction to work up for the French.

The Portuguese, the Italians, the Spaniards, the Russians, Scandinavians (especially Norwegians) & a host of other offer an indefinite amount of very rich |3| material to the investigator.

Unfortunately for us the number of scientifically trained philologeans is very small indeed and consequently the work must go forward very slowly. I wish most sincerely that we could have some of your deutsche Wissenschaft to help us out.

With renewed thanks for your work, I am

Yours most sincerely,

A. M. Elliott
