Dear Sir,

Pray accept my best thanks for your interesting essay on the Georgian language and the excellent map with which it is accompanied. In the year 1888 I paid a fairly long visit to this interesting country having a little before busied myself with the language, making use of Brosset’s Grammar.1 I have read most oft he works which you cite in your Essay and indeed possess most of them. Erckert’s Map2 I found very good indeed. I trust his work chiefly fort he map. All Radde’s3 works are also good. I have read a fairly good deal in German, Russian, & French writers on Georgian – especially the Russian reviews, Известия Кавказского отдела. When I was at Tiflis, I had many works presented to me by the Literary Society (which I have read carefully) and also by |2| Mr Gogitschayschwili4, whom you cite several times. I have found your Essay most suggestive – and am glad that the philology of the subject has fallen into the hands of a man who is so scientifically trained for the study. Brosset’s books are very useful, but he is somewhat prescientific. I have not read much Georgian lately as I have been so busy with Slavonic work. I am grateful to you for the pleasure and information which your Essay has given me.

I remain very truly
W. R. Morfill
