Dear Professor Schuchardt,

It is very interesting that you are so much occupied with Meroitic. I wish very much that I had spare copies of the books Karanòg & Meroitic Inscriptions,¹ but they are long since gone or promised. The new volume of Meroitic Inscriptions should reach the Academy in a few days. It is entirely devoted to the inscriptions themselves & the same is the case with my Karanòg volume which contains the two series of altars & stelae found by MacIver at Shablûl and Karanôg (Amada and Aniba respectively). The excavations which produced them are described by MacIver and Woolley in other volumes.² It is possible that a copy of Karanôg was sent to Professor Reinisch.³|2| As to the Faras volume, I am preparing it now, and I shall hope to have the pleasure of sendung you a copy next year.⁴ It will contain an account oft he excavation as well as the inscriptions.

It is a very serious matter to study so expensive a subject as a mere offshoot of larger studies!

I have not yet obtained Almkvist’s Nubian studies⁵ which I believe are published by Zettersteen⁶, and I do not know where to look for them.

The Old Nubian texts are practically confined to the Berlin MSS and Budgés. I know of no other considerable |3| text but only unintelligible fragments and graffiti.

[Abb. einscannen]⁷ = z was a very doubtful equation when I published Karanôg, but in passing the proofs of Inscr. II I found a fairly good proof of it. By z is meant [einscannen]⁸?

It is indeed curious that ḫ and h exist but not h or ḥ. I use ḫ h as equivalents of [einscannen Hieroglyphen]⁹ respectively. Nearly all my sound-identifications come through the rotten unsatisfactory medium of Egyptian.
