Dear Professor,
I have received this afternoon from The Academy a copy of Urte’s translation of Genesis etc.1; und I expect that you will receive one in a day or two from Oxford. Advance copies are sent to reviews in England. That is how I have mine earlier. I must write a few words on it in The Academy, though I cannot pretend to criticise the Basque. Many thanks for your letter. I have thought it my duty to write to Mr. Llewellyn Thomas about D’s, threat of publishing private letters.2 I have long creased to correspond with him, and I am very sure that he will not publish the last two letters that I wrote to him. Nothing can justify his language to you about the religion of Jesus. His only excuse can be that he is not sane as other men are, in spite of his remarkable talent in formal language.
Have you seen that at last Anthropologists are beginning to find that ‘Broca3 or the Basque Skull’ is not the trustworthy document that they had supposed. I wish you a happy festival at Viena, and a pleasant meeting with Don Juan Valera4, whose admirer I am.

3 Paul Broca ist, neben anderen neurologischen Studien, die wissenschaftlich von bleibender Bedeutung waren, auch anthropometrische Wege gegangen. So hat er z.B. auch Theorien über Schädelformen aufgestellt und u.a. Schädelmessungen bei den Basken unternommen: Broca, Paul (1868) Mémoire sur les Crances des Basques de Saint-Jean-de-Luz suivi de recherches sur la Comparaison des Indices Céphaliques sur le vivant et sur le squelette. Paris: Victor Masson. Außerdem gibt es 1875 aus seiner Feder eine Arbeit über den Ursprung die die Verbreitung des Baskischen: Sur l'origine er la répartition de la Langue Basque. 4 Schuchardt hatte Juan Valera auf seiner Spanienreise 1879 kennengelernt und mit ihm einen Briefwechsel unterhalten, der auch sehr herzliche Töne annimmt, HSA 12327-12334.
