        <p>Sokollu Mehmet Pasha informs Emperor Maximilian II of the latest political developments in Poland. Initially, the brother of the king of <rs
            ref="#mpr6873"
            type="place">France</rs> was elected king, but later the French withdrew and the Polish nobility, in agreement with the Ottomans, elected the voivode of <rs
            ref="#mpr9372" type="place">Transylvania</rs>. However, tensions escalated when the emperor agreed with the ruler of Muscovy to place his son on the Polish throne. This led to the acceptance of many Poles at the border, much to the displeasure of the Ottomans. The grand vizier warned against any military action against Poland and ordered the tatar khan to guard the border with Muscovy. He expresses his frustration at the reception of the traitors János Balassa and Gáspár Bekes and stresses the formidable strength of the Sultan’s armies should peace be disturbed.</p>

               <lb/>deß landß hern und gemein beschlossen in ierem ratt bey der zeitt deß großmehtigen khaiß<lb

            type="person">solltan Selim</rs>, Gott sey im gnadig, auf die guet ainikheitt und freindschafft die eer hatt
               <lb/>mit dem <rs

          </rs>, in dem gemeltten ratt so haben sy des <rs ref="#mpr19666" type="person">khonigs auß

            type="person">brudern</rs> erwöltt. Darnah Gottß bevelhß und irer gelegenheit
               <lb/>gabs, daß die auß <rs
            ref="#mpr6873" type="place">Frankreih</rs> von dem land <rs ref="#mpr6814"
            type="place">Pollen</rs> die hendt abzogen, darnah wider die
               <lb/>gemelten hern auß <rs
            ref="#mpr6814" type="place">Pollen</rs> zu ierem ratt beschlossen haben, auf unserß großmehtig
               <lb/>
          <rs ref="#mpr14045"
            type="person">kheiserß</rs> guette freindschafft und ainikheit wider botschafft zuschikhen, ier grosmeh<lb

            rend="#shy"/>tikheit zu ehren und zu dienen und wider zubeschliessen und zu ratschlagen, aber
               <lb/>sy wollten, daß sy aus andere nazion in iere land niht sin oder gemüett hetten, sonder
               <lb/>ier großmehtikeitt sol ainen auß ierem land oder fan ierer gsanden bottschafft ainen
               <lb/>erwollen. Da hatt ier großmehtikeitt von inen begertt und geschafft, das sy den <rs

          </rs> sollen annemmen. Darauf haben sy beschlossen und ier großmehtigkheit

               <lb/>ist eur meischtet mitt dem <rs

            type="person">moskawitterischen khonig</rs> verne ainß worden und hatt
               <lb/>im willen und gemüett, daß die hern und haubttleit auß <rs

               In diser geschtaltt sein die mär und ney
               <lb/>zeittung an ier gros mehtikheit Porten und großwürdigen orn khomen, daß hatt ier groß
               <lb/>mehtikheit vier wunder angenommen und ier großmehtikheit verseh sih gegen ier
               <lb/>meischtett niht, daß sy solltt ein willen oder wissen deß volkß oder handelß
               <lb/>sol haben, dan so langy zeit mitt hofnung der guetten freindschafft frid und ainikhaitt
               <lb/>die ier meieschtatt vor nahstliher zeitt wider fermiertt und geschterkht hatt, aber
               <lb/>eß mag wolsein, daß deß iezig angenomen follkh ainen zugehertt, der ier meieschtett
               <lb/>niht wol untherthanig ist wie <rs
            ref="#mpr19445"
            type="person">Walaschy Janusch</rs> und des gleihenß, die mit irem
               <lb/>unfersthandt auch ein willen oder fiernemen haben. Auf das fernemen hatt ier grosmehti<lb

          </rs> mitt ieren hauptleitten und den hern grossen <rs ref="#mprunknown" type="person">

            <lb/>wegler wegy</rs> mitt allen seinen rumelischen folkh und hauptleiten verschafft und

               <lb/>sollen sy nuer wider in khriegen, und darnah den grossen tatarischen hern <rs
            ref="#mpr19430" type="person">tatar han</rs>
          <lb/>auh ein befelhe geschikht, daß er mit seinem Tatern, die mer seindt dan hundert tausent,
               <lb/>fertig soll sein und sol auf sehen auf der moskawitterischen graniz, ob er sih oder ain
               <lb/>anderer anemen wiert, so soll er nuer auh wider den feind khriegen.

               <lb/>groß mehtikheitt deß landß halben antwortt und befelh geben, darmitt gemeltten

               <lb/>freindschafft und ainikhaitt hatt eur meieschtetten, dem gott gnadig sey, der alttn khaiser wortten
               <lb/>und ehrn, wie eß sih dan auf guett freindschafft und ainikhaitt gebüertt hatt, geschriwen
               <lb/>und wissen lassen hatt, desgleihen auh eur meieschtatt gethon hatt. Darnah weiß eur
               <lb/>meieschtatt, daß deß land <rs

            type="place">Polln</rs> und khonig vor langer zeitt in ier groß mehtikheitt huett
               <lb/>und beschirm ist, alls iere geschlaht sih untter ier groß mehtikhaitt fligl und schatten sih
               <lb/>behuetendt in guetter rue und ainikheitt und auh mererß thälß deß gemeltten
               <lb/>polnischen folkhs mitt khaufmanschafft in ier großwürdigen Portten und schtetten in
               <lb/>guetter ainikhaitt sein gewesen, aber mitt den <rs

            type="person">ttatar han</rs> haben sie niht gar mögen
               <lb/>zufriden sein, deßt halben haben sy sih in der zeitt treilih zu ier grosmehtigkhheitt
               <lb/>gehalten. Wan ier groß mehtikheitt daß land ainzunemen ain gemiett oder willen hatt
               <lb/>gehabt, daß wer gar niht schwer gewesen aber van wegen guetter freindschafft und
               <lb/>ainikhaitt ließ ier großmehtikheitt daß landt und daß folkh in guetter rue, aber eß
               <lb/>von khoniglihen schtand und geschleht khainer mer bliwen. Aber vor fergangner zeitt
               <lb/>sol eur meischtatt wol wissen, das ainer von khonikhlihen geschlahtt deß hern <rs

            type="person">tatar
               <lb/>han</rs> sein gefangner sol gewest sain. So haben sy ain beschluß und ferainung gemaht, von
               <lb/>jar zu jar, von geschleht zu geschlehtt, dem hern <rs

               <lb/>aber die weil der <rs

            type="person">khonig</rs> geschtorwen ist, so haben nihtß geschikht. So sein etlih loß leitt

            type="person">ttattar han</rs> sein sun khomen und haben in aufgeredt wie sy daß
               <lb/>jor nihtß geschikhtt hetten, so hatt inen deß grossen <rs

            type="person">sun</rs> gefolgtt und
               <lb/>moht sih auf und brauwtt und blindertt ein etlich flekhen auf der bolnischen
               <lb/>graniz. Daß ist fier ier groß mehtikheitt und fier seinen fattern den <rs
            ref="#mpr19430" type="person">tatar han</rs>
          <lb/>khomen, daß ist ier groß mehtickheit gar ubl angangen und hatt den <rs ref="#mprunknown"
            type="person">jungen han</rs> sein
               <lb/>schuld nicht vergewen, sonder hatt in der massen geschtraft, wie es dan pillih und
               <lb/>reht sol sein und auh ferschuldt hatt, aber die hern und hauptleitt und gantz
               <lb/>gemein aus <rs
            ref="#mpr6814" type="place">Polln</rs>, sie haltten sih gegen ier groß mehtikheitt dermassen willig und
               <lb/>unterthanig, deßthalben wil ier groß mehtikhaitt auh niht daß ander leitt sollen
               <lb/>wider sie sein. Desgleihen soll eur folkh und hauptleitt auh in guetter huett sein,
               <lb/>darmitt daß wier auh niht ursah finden, den frid zu brechen, daß ier darnah niht
               <lb/>sagen solltt, wier haben nihtt wissen oder willen gehabtt, es habenß leitt thon, die
               <lb/>unßern willen niht mitt haben gehabt.
            </p>

               Wan ier also euh werdett bereden, so wissen

          <lb/>wier woll, daß niht alain eure haupttleitt, sonder bruderß brudern darmitt seitt.
               <lb/>Wofeer aber eur hauptleitt in solher sahen etwaß ferschulden, so soltt ier auh desgleichen
               <lb/>thuen und nah seinen verschuldenß sollt ier sie schtraffen, aber ier habtt ier zwen
               <lb/>loß veratterisch veratter, den <rs
            ref="#mpr19445" type="person">Walaschy Janusch</rs> und dem <rs ref="#mpr19446"
            type="person">Wekesch Gaschber</rs>, für guett angenomen
               <lb/>und habtt mitt den <rs
            ref="#mpr19445" type="person">Walasch</rs> ain etlih schtraß rauwer und dieb geschikht auf <rs

               <lb/>würgen</rs> zu. So habtt ier wol fernomen, wie eß inen gangen ist, wie si geschlagen und
               <lb/>gefangen und in khetten geschmidt und darfan gefiertt sein worden und habem auh
               <lb/>etlih geschlosser eingenomen. Noh dem auf der boschnakischen graniz ist ainer gemeltt
               <lb/>worden mitt namen <rs
            ref="#mpr19669"
            type="person">der van Auschpurg</rs>, hatt auh in seinem verschtand und fiernemen
               <lb/>mitt etlih tausentt man wollen khaschteln und etlih flekhen wellen blindern.
               <lb/>Wie eß im gangen
               ist woll gewist, aber es gehett alleß unrehtt nach unsern beschluß
               <lb/>deß frids und ainikhaitt, so weis eur meischtatt woll, wer nicht auf rehten weg gehtt,
               <lb/>wie es sein wiertt darnah. Wanß euh gereutt, so gibtß niht mer hülf mitt ainem
               <lb/>khlainen rumor, moht werden daß ier den frid und ainikhaitt ein ursah gewtt.
               <lb/>Das sih der groß mehtige <rs
            ref="#mpr19414" type="person">khaiser</rs> erzürnett, daß unser khainer mag sein der im sein
               <lb/>zorn moht verwenden, wie eß dan gehn solltt, daß soltt eur meiesthatt noh bey
               <lb/>zeitten woll wissen. Weitter alleß was sich zu guotter freindschafft, frid und ainikhait
               <lb/>gebüertt, daß wier on zweifl alleß mitt euh angeschteltt, geschriwen und enpotten, es
               <lb/>khain punkht niht gewesen, den wier niht mitt euh beschlossen und ausgeriht
               <lb/>haben.

               Weitter eur meieschtatt <rs ref="#mpr14187"
            type="person">bottschafften</rs>, die hie in der groß würdigen Porten ist, hatt
               <lb/>woll fernomen, wie daß der großmahtig und unuwerwuntlih <rs
            ref="#mpr19414" type="person">khaiser</rs> mitt seinen
               <lb/>ungezeltten folkh, dene der liewe Gott helf von ewikhaitt zu ewikheitt, und mit
               <lb/>seiner grossen khrafft, die im Gott gewen hatt, wiert auf schtehn. Darzu hatt eur
               <lb/>

                  Let it be known that before this time the <rs ref="#mpr19426"

              type="place">Poland</rs> had good friendship and unity 
                  with the venerable Porte of our most powerful <rs
              ref="#mpr14045" type="person">emperor</rs>. In such friendship the <rs ref="#mpr19426"
                type="person">king of <rs ref="#mpr6814" type="place">Poland</rs>

            </rs> died, 
            therefore the lords and commoners of the country decided in their council at the time of the great emperor 
                  <rs
              ref="#mpr14045"
              type="person">Sultan Selim</rs> – God have mercy on him – and due to the good unity and friendship he had with the <rs
              ref="#mpr19666" type=" person ">king of <rs ref="#mpr6873" type="place">France</rs>
            </rs>, 
                  to elect the <rs ref="#mpr19667" type="person">brother</rs> of the <rs
              ref="#mpr19666" type=" person ">king of <rs ref="#mpr6873" type="place">France</rs>
            </rs>. Then, at God’s command and instigation, those from <rs ref="#mpr6873"
              type="place">France</rs> withdrew 
            their hands from the land of <rs ref="#mpr6814"
              type="place">Poland</rs>, whereupon the aforementioned lords from <rs ref="#mpr6814"
              type="place">Poland</rs> decided in their council 
                  to send another embassy for the sake of our great <rs
              ref="#mpr14045"
              type="person">emperor’s</rs> good friendship and unity to honor and serve his highness, 
            and once more to decide and take counsel. However, as they had neither mind nor spirit for someone from another nation, they wished his highness 
            to choose one from their country or from the embassy they had sent. Thereupon his highness requested and decreed that they should appoint the <rs
              ref="#mpr19436" type="person">voivode</rs> from <rs ref="#mpr9372"
              type="place">Transylvania</rs>, 
                  and they agreed, executed and deemed the will and request of his highness to be appropriate, but in the midst of this action and decision, 
                  <rs
              ref="#mpr14157" type="person">your majesty</rs> also came to an agreement with the <rs ref="#mpr19668"
              type="person">Muscovite king</rs> and, with the will and intention that the lords and captains of <rs
              ref="#mpr6814" type="place">Poland</rs> should accept your son as king, 
            had people accepted at the borders in many places.
            </p>

            Thus have news and tidings come to his highness’s Porte and to his venerable ears, 
            which he has received with astonishment, and his highness does not suspect that your majesty 
            has any ill intent or knowledge of these people and affairs, for we have been so long in the hope of good friendship, 
            peace and unity, which your majesty has lately renewed and strengthened. However, it may well be that the people 
            now accepted belong those who are not submissive to your majesty, such as <rs
              ref="#mpr19445"
              type="person">Balassa Jánoš</rs> and the like, 
                  who may also harbor evil intentions in their irresponsibility. Upon hearing this, his highness ordered and commanded the <rs
              ref="#mpr14163" type="person">pasha of <rs ref="#mpr7448" type="place">Buda</rs>
            </rs>, who guards the border – may God grant him fortune – and the <rs ref="#mpr19458"
                type="person">pasha of <rs ref="#mpr1785" type="place">Timișoara</rs>
            </rs> along with their captains and the great <rs ref="#mprunknown" type="person">beylerbey of <rs
                ref="#mpr14238" type="place">Rumelia</rs>
            </rs> 
            with all his Rumelian people and captains,

                  that they should be on the lookout and fight whoever takes on <rs
              ref="#mpr6814" type="place">Poland</rs> or <rs ref="#mpr9372"
              type="place">Transylvania</rs>. 
                  After that, he also sent an order to the great <rs
              ref="#mpr19430" type="person">tatar khan</rs> to be ready with his Tatars, who number more than a hundred thousand, 
            and to watch the Muscovite border to see if anyone would take up the fight, in which case he should engage the enemy.
            </p>

            Thus, his highness has given answer and order in the country, so that no harm may befall the said country of <rs
              ref="#mpr6814"
              type="place">Poland</rs>, 
                  but shortly before, on the basis of good friendship and unity, he has written and given notice to your majesty – may God have mercy – in honor of the old emperor’s words, as is fitting for good friendship and unity, 
            and your majesty has done likewise. Accordingly, your majesty knows that the land of <rs
              ref="#mpr6814"
              type="place">Poland</rs> and the king have long been under the protection
            and shield of his highness, and that their nobility, under his highness’ wing and seeking protection in his shadow, 
            are in good peace and unity, just as several parts of the said Polish people, including merchants and towns, 
            have been in good unity in his venerable Porte. However, they were not at all pleased with <rs
              ref="#mpr19430"
              type="person">tatar khan</rs>, which is why they remained loyal to his highness during this time. 
            If his highness had had the mind or the will to take the country, it would not have been difficult, 
            but because of the good friendship and unity, his highness left the country and the people in good peace, 
            although none of the royal rank and lineage remained. Still, your majesty should know that in the past, one of the royal family was a prisoner of <rs
              ref="#mpr19430"
              type="person">tatar khan</rs>. 
            Therefore, they made a resolution and an agreement to give a gift to <rs
              ref="#mpr19430"
              type="person">tatar khan</rs> from year to year, from generation to generation, 
            but because the king died, they sent nothing. That is why some loose people on the border went to the son of <rs
              ref="#mpr19430"
              type="person">tatar khan</rs> and told him how nothing had been sent for the year, 
            and then the son of the great <rs
              ref="#mpr19430"
              type="person">tatar khan</rs> followed them and set out to burn and plunder several villages on the Polish border. This matter came to the attention of his highness and his cousin, <rs
              ref="#mpr19430"
              type="person">tatar khan</rs>, greatly displeasing his highness, 
            who did not forgive the young khan for his transgression but ensured that he was punished to the extent that was fair, right, 
            and commensurate with his guilt. The lords, captains, and commoners of <rs
              ref="#mpr6814" type="place">Poland</rs>, however, are so obedient and submissive to his highness 
            that he does not want others to antagonize them. In the same way, let your people and captains beware, 
            lest we find cause to break the peace, so that you may not say afterwards that you had neither knowledge nor will, 
            that people who acted against your will did so.
            </p>
          <p xml:id="p.9">           
            Therefore, if it turns out this way, we know

                  that not only your captains but also your brothers’ brothers are involved. 
            If your captains are guilty in such matters, however, you should do the same and punish them according to their guilt. 
            Instead, you have taken in two loose traitors, <rs
              ref="#mpr19445" type="person">Balassa János</rs> and <rs ref="#mpr19446"
              type="person">Bekes Gáspár</rs>, and with <rs ref="#mpr19445"
              type="person">Balassa</rs>, you have sent a robber 
            and thief to <rs ref="#mpr9372"
              type="place">Transylvania</rs>. So you have surely heard how they fared, how they were beaten, captured, forged in chains, and led away, 
            and that they also took many castles. Afterwards, a man named <rs
              ref="#mpr19669" type="person">von Auersperg</rs> was reported on the Bosniak border, 
            who intended to plunder castles and many settlements with several thousand men. How he has fared is well known, 
            as all injustice is dealt with according to our resolution of peace and unity. Therefore, your majesty knows well what will happen to those who do not tread the right path. 
            If you regret it, do not provide any more help to small riots, so that you may give cause for peace and unity. 
            That the mighty emperor is enraged, that he is not one to overcome his anger, of this your majesty shall know the consequences 
            in due time. Moreover, we have undoubtedly done, written and communicated with you everything that befits good friendship, peace and unity, 
            and there has not been a single point on which we have not decided and agreed with you.
            </p>

                  Furthermore, your majesty’s <rs ref="#mprunknown"
              type="person">ambassador</rs> here in the great Porte has well understood that the mighty and invincible <rs
              ref="#mpr19414"
              type="person">emperor</rs> 
            will rise with his innumerable people, whom the good God will help from eternity to eternity, 
            and with his great strength, which God has given him. Additionally, your <rs
              ref="#mpr14187"
              type="person">ambassador</rs> is against accepting people at the border for no reason and against breaking peace and unity for no reason, and your <rs
              ref="#mpr14187" type="person">ambassador</rs> also indicates that it is better that you refrain from <rs
              ref="#mpr6814" type="place">Poland</rs> or <rs ref="#mpr9372"
              type="place">Transylvania</rs>, 
                  but remain in good peace and unity, as has happened and been decreed up to now. Possibly, the letters of his highness, which he has sent for friendship and peace, have reached your majesty. To prevent the news from causing an uproar, your majesty’s <rs
              ref="#mpr14187"
              type="person">ambassador</rs> wants your majesty 
            to be informed of the cause several days in advance, and due to the good friendship, unity and good peace we have had thus far with your majesty, 
            we could not refuse your <rs
              ref="#mpr14187"
              type="person">ambassador’s</rs> request. Due to the aforementioned great request of your majesty’s <rs
              ref="#mpr14187"
              type="person">ambassador</rs>, it was deemed sufficient not to omit the great letters we sent a few days ago, but to let your majesty know about them through your <rs
              ref="#mpr14187" type="person">ambassador’s</rs> people.
