Abstract
Sokollu Mehmed Pasha replies to a letter, sent by either Rudolf or his father Maximilian, in which one of them reported extensively on looting and pillaging as well as the conquest of several castles by the Ottomans. The grand vizier replies that Rudolf is partly ill-informed and that the conquest of the castles is partly a reaction to previous misconduct on the part of the Habsburgs. For example, the treacherous János Balassa had sent his son and troops from these castles to Transylvania to help Gáspár Bekes. The grand vizier also complains to Rudolf that Habsburg troops have crossed into Ottoman territory, made slaves and stolen sheep and cattle. The pasha of Buda was ordered to respect the peace, but Rudolf has to ensure this from his side. Contrary to the emperor’s assurances, the gifts of honor have not arrived and should be sent as soon as possible.
