Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha replies to a letter in which Maximilian had protested against the destruction and plundering of Kanisza that the border violations in Hungary are always committed by the Habsburgs. Contrary to Habsburg assurances, the newly fortified fort of Kalo (Nagykálló) also has more than just defensive tasks to fulfill: the garrison there prevents countless surrounding villages from paying their proper taxes and is also responsible for the raid on the money transport between Szolnok and Buda. He then cites examples of (George) Zriny’s actions in contravention of the treaty. The destruction of Kanisza was finally carried out in retaliation for the raid on Boluntwar (Bolondvár) that had started from this fortress. On the Ottoman side, the sultan issued a strict order, which no one is able to ignore, to keep the peace as long as the other side also keeps it. Anyone guilty of violating the peace is removed from his post, such as sanjak-bey Ali Bey of Istolni Belgrade (Székesfehérvár) and sanjak-bey Mehmed Bey of Bosniaa. The grand vizier also demands similarly rigorous measures from the other side and finally demands the extradition of the deposed voivod Bogdan and Kaspar Bekes, who had been granted admission in contravention of the treaty provisions.
