Object:The ‘Rex’ cinema in Tirana
Description:The picture shows the interior of the ‘Rex’ cinema in approximately 1940 from the gallery perspective. In the centre is the screen with a platform in front. On the platform are two pianos, two chairs, a double bass and a drum with the inscription ‘Eduardo Bianco’ topped by a crown.
Comment:The ‘Nacional’ cinema in Tirana was Albania’s first European-style cinema, opened by Jusuf Beshir in 1926. During Italian occupation (1939–1943) it was renamed ‘Rex’, and in the subsequent communist era, ‘November 17’. The musical instruments in the photograph indicate that the cinema was also used for concerts.
