Jovan Ritopečki’s
photographic
documentation
of Yugoslav
labor migration
in Austria

Jovan Ritopečki (1923-1989) was a Yugoslav photographer and photojournalist who became a visual chronicler of the Yugoslav community in Austria during the 1970s and 1980s. Even decades after his death, he and his work continue to play an important role among ex-Yugoslav associations and clubs. In the last ten years a small selection of Ritopečki’s photographs was presented to a wider audience in Austria and the successor states of socialist Yugoslavia in socio-historical exhibitions detailing Yugoslav labor migration.

Before migrating to Austria in 1966, the trained radio technician and self-taught photographer had amassed more than 15 years of experience as a professional photojournalist in Yugoslavia for state news agencies. His work as a freelance photojournalist in Austria is inseparable from the larger history of Yugoslav labor migration in the 1970s and 1980s. No other photographer documented the living conditions of Yugoslav migrant workers in Austria as comprehensively as Ritopečki, and for as long, doing so over the course of two decades. Through his photographs, Ritopečki offered insight into their workplaces and dwellings, how they spent their free time, and the formation of clubs and associations. As such, Ritopečki’s estate represents a unique collection in the field of Austrian photojournalism.

The image repository VISMIG provides a glimpse into Jovan Ritopečki‘s photography concerning Yugoslav migrant workers. Series of negatives as well as a selection of analog prints present Ritopečki’s photographic estate in a thematic and historic context. At the same time, the usage histories of individual images, primarily in publications, newspapers, and magazines, is made apparent. Through documenting how Ritopečki’s work was published, its photojournalistic context can be better understood.
