Title | Two autograph drawings |
Description | A single leaf (possibly from the Codex Atlanticus ?) showing two autograph designs for machines: a maritime assault mechanism and a device for bending wooden beams, both with autograph annotations in mirror writing. On verso a note by the bookseller Lefebvre, from whose collection the sheet had once been confiscated, and additional annotations by other hands. Curiously, Stefan Zweig describes this piece both in his essay on the Morrison collection and on the index card of his own collection as a "Blatt mit zwei Flugmaschinen" ("Leaf with two flying machines"). However, there can be no doubt as to the identity of the leaf, since Morrison - from whose collection Zweig acquired it - owned no other drawings by da Vinci and the item is clearly identifiable from the annotations on the reverse. |
