A fifth player is walking on the other side of the field. In the centre of the photograph, a member of the white team has a jersey with dark stripes, slightly different to those of his teammates. Spectators, almost exclusively male, are sitting and standing on a small slope at the edge of the pitch. Field hockey was introduced to the Ottoman Empire by the British, who organized a first match in Kadıköy in 1910. During World War I, Fenerbahçe Kulübü was among the first clubs to popularize hockey within the Ottoman Empire and later in the Turkish Republic.
