In den vier Eckmedaillons befindet sich jeweils eine Blumenvase. Die Bordüre des Zentralbildes weist eine fortlaufende Blüten- und Blattranke auf, während die äußeren Bordüren einzelne Blumensträuße unter einer Nische zeigen. Blumenvasen und Nischenarchitektur finden sich sowohl auf dem Prunkzelt (S 220) als auch auf dem Wandteppich (S 230). Daher ist es wahrscheinlich, dass die Polsterüberzüge und der Wandteppich zur Ausstattung des Zelts in der Wagenburg (S 220) gehören (ATASOY, Tent, 275, Nr. 138). Das Design der Polsterüberzüge wurzelt einerseits in den Bildvorlagen des 17. Jahrhunderts (Bordürengestaltung und Form der Blumenvasen), weist aber andererseits auch neue Einflüsse aus dem frühen 18. Jahrhundert auf, beispielsweise sind die Blumen des Zentralbildes plastischer gestaltet und daher mit den Blumensträußen auf einer osmanischen Kissenhülle im Königlichen Museum in Brüssel vergleichbar (Inv. Nr. V2. 21, Bursa, um 1700?, vgl. DE JONGHE, Silk, 91). Auf noch späteren Kissenhüllen häufen sich einerseits die Blumenbouquets in den Eckmedaillons, andererseits aber ersetzt die aus der französischen Kunst abgeleitete einzelne Blumenvase („imperiale frittilaria“) das traditionelle Bildschema mit zentraler Rosette (PHILLIPS, Sea, 208–213). Da osmanisches Mobiliar bis zum 18. Jahrhundert kaum vorhanden war, spielten Textilien wie Vorhänge, Teppiche und Polsterüberzüge eine große Rolle bei der Inszenierung von Wohlstand und sozialem Rang. Vor allem die osmanische Buchmalerei des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts veranschaulicht die osmanische Elite bei ihren Freizeitaktivitäten: Eine Miniatur zeigt beispielsweise einen osmanischen Würdenträger, der in einem mit Blumenmedaillons geschmückten Zelt auf einem Teppich vor zwei Polsterkissen sitzt. Die bläulichen Polsterüberzüge weisen ein Blumenmuster in Goldstickerei auf und sind den Polsterüberzügen in der Wagenburg nicht unähnlich (Topkapı Museum, Bibliothek, Inv. Nr. H.2148, fol. 8a, vgl. PHILLIPS, Culture, 158–159). Die beiden Polsterüberzüge gelangten wahrscheinlich wie das Prunkzelt (S 220) und der Wandteppich (S 230) in der Wagenburg als Geschenk des osmanischen Großbotschafters Ibrahim Pascha im Jahr 1699/1700 an den kaiserlichen Hof in Wien. Diese waren vor allem bei höfischen Festen in Verwendung. Die beiden Polsterüberzüge sind sehr gut erhalten. Sekundärliteratur Textile Cushion Cover Wagenburg, Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna https://www.kaiserliche-wagenburg.at S 228, S 229 The cushion covers (yastiks) were made of Kemḫā fabric, a high-quality silk fabric (cf. tapestry S 230 in the Wagenburg), and show a rosette medallion in the middle surrounded by a wreath of carnations and tulips. Each of the four corner medallions contains a flower vase. The border of the central image features a continuous tendril of flowers and leaves, while the outer borders show individual bouquets of flowers under a niche. Flower vases and niche architecture can be found on both the ceremonial tent (S 220) and the wall hanging (S 230). It is therefore likely that the cushion covers and the wall hanging belong to the furnishings of the tent in the Wagenburg (S 220) (ATASOY, 2000, 275, no. 138). The design of the cushion covers is rooted in seventeenth-century artistic models (the border design and the shape of the flower vases) but also indicates early eighteenth century influences. For example, the flowers in the central image are more sculptural and therefore comparable to the bouquets on an Ottoman cushion cover in the Royal Museum in Brussels (inv. no. V2. 21, Bursa, c. 1700?, see DE JONGHE, 2004, 91). A further sign of this are the flower bouquets in the corner medallions accumulate, whereas the single flower vase (imperiale frittilaria) derived from French art replaces the traditional pictorial scheme with a central rosette (PHILLIPS, 2021, 208–213). As Ottoman furniture had been scarce until the eighteenth century, textiles such as curtains, carpets, and cushion covers played a major role in the staging of wealth and social status. For example, Ottoman book illustrations from the early eighteenth century often depicted the Ottoman elite enjoying their leisure activities: One miniature shows an Ottoman dignitary sitting on a carpet in front of two cushions in a tent decorated with floral medallions. The bluish cushion covers are distinguished by a floral pattern with gold embroidery, which makes them similar to the cushion covers in the Wagenburg (Topkapı Museum, Library, inv. no. H.2148, fol. 8a, see PHILLIPS, 2014, 158–159). The two cushion covers probably arrived at the imperial court in Vienna as a gift from Ottoman Ambassador Ibrahim Pasha in 1699–1700 alongside the parade tent (S 220) and the wall hanging (S 230) in the Wagenburg. They were mainly used for courtly activities. The two cushion covers are in very good condition.
