On Ritopečki’s Photography

This section offers brief insights into the photography of Jovan Ritopečki. Its thematically organised texts open a window into the various aspects of his work, such as how themes like labor and workers or the concept of community are visually explored, as well as the collaborative nature of photographic production. The texts are intended to spark interest in Ritopečki’s body of work, while also raising awareness that, contrary to a still widespread belief, photography does not simply depict reality. Rather, it constructs an image of reality through technical means, selection, settings, composition and performative practices. As John Berger notes, photography always refers to “what is not seen”, isolating, preserving, and presenting a moment taken from a continuum' (Berger, John: Understanding a Photograph, London: Penguin Books 2013, 20).
