Object:Studio portrait of a man in folk attire
Description:Full length shot of an elderly man with a long moustache, wearing dark folk attire with a belt, light-coloured leggings, and traditional peasant shoes (tsarvuli). He is wearing a fur cap and has thrown a coat over his right shoulder. He is standing in front of a painted canvas backdrop, which creates the illusion of the scene being set in nature. He is holding a shepherd's staff in his left hand.
Comment:Given title by the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art: "Südbulgarischer Bauer" (South Bulgarian peasant). The positive print on the archival board is identical with a photograph kept at the Scientific Archive of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which makes it possible to date the photograph and identify the photographer. See VASE.00241. The photograph is published under the title "Male attire from Zlatitsa region" in the Bulgarian newspaper "Nasheto parvo izlozhenie" (Our First Fair), Plovdiv, 1892/43, 7.
