Description:Full length shot of three men wearing folk attire with elements of military uniforms, traditional peasant shoes (tsarvuli), and leggings. They are carrying swords and holding long rifles. Verso: hand-written inscriptions and signature of Konstantin Josef Jireček.
Comment:In the center: Panayot Hitov (1830 – 1918). He was a Bulgarian hayduk/haydutin, a national revolutionary and anti-Ottoman band leader (voivode). Ivan Pophristov Karschovski (1839 - 1914) was a Bulgarian revolutionary, journalist, lawyer, and deputy at the Constituent and the First Bulgarian Assembly (1879). He was among the founders of the Bulgarian Literary Society (renamed "Bulgarian Academy of Sciences" in 1911). Another print of this photograph, mounted on cardboard, titled "Freedom or Death" and bearing the printed names of the people in the picture, is kept at "St. Cyril and St. Methodius National Library" C 627.
