Nušić's play is based on a true story about Ivan Knežević, who was a Serbian revolutionary and obor-knez of the Bijelina nāḥiyah around 1806. Raja Pavlović (1861–1933) was a popular actor and talented singer at the Royal Serbian National Theatre in Belgrade.
