Object:Studio portrait of Sofija Nenadović
Description:Full-length shot of a young, unmarried woman dressed in traditional Serbian folk attire. She is wearing an embroidered jelek over an embroidered shirt and a ''pregača'' (traditional embroidered apron with a geometric pattern). The shirt is fastened with a belt, which is decorated with a ''pafte'' (richly ornamented buckle). She has flowers woven into her hair. A painted canvas backdrop is creating the impression of the scene being set outdoors by a lake.
Comment:Probably the great-granddaughter of Jakov Nenadović (1765–1836), who was the first Minister of Interior Affairs in Serbia. Jakov Nenadović and his nephew, Mateja Nenadović, played an important role as voivode (military commander) in the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottomans. After Karadjordje and Janko Katić, Nenadović was perhaps the most influential contemporary figure in Serbia. Sofija gave the photograph to her good friend Ana Jovanović as a gift. The folk attire worn in the picture was typical of the Serbian Danube and Save valleys and of the area around Belgrade.
