Object:Population census official at the door
Description:A smiling state official, neatly dressed in a rain coat and a white shirt and tie, is standing in front of a house taking notes. He is wearing a brassard with the letters ‘M M’ on his left upper arm. In the open door in the centre of the photograph, two young women, a girl and two boys are attentively watching the procedure, also smiling.
Comment:The photograph depicts a state official registering the inhabitants of Istanbul. The letters ‘M M’ on his brassard stand for ‘sayım memuru’ (census official) and indicate that photograph was taken after the adoption of the Latin alphabet. Population censuses were carried out in 1930 and 1935 soon after this reform. Similar photographs were published in Akşam newspaper on 20 October 1935.
