Object:The ‘Imperiale’ cinema in Tirana
Description:The photograph shows the interior of the ‘Imperiale’ cinema in Tirana in approximately 1940. The first floor is divided into three sectors by two low railings. Two levels of boxes stretch along the sidewalls and the wall of the screening room.
Comment:In combination with the image ‘baci 1155’, the photograph underlines the social stratification represented by the cinema seating. The sector in front of the first bar at the front of the picture is equipped only with benches (see baci 1155) and constituted the cheapest seating. The second and third first-floor sectors are shown on this picture. The most expensive sector consisted of the boxes on the second floor. The inserted name ‘Luce’ (an Italian film and photo production company) indicates that the photograph was taken during the Italian occupation of Albania between 1939 and 1943.
