He took part in the Caucasian War, the Crimean War and the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877–1878. As of 1878–1879 he was Russia's Supreme Commissar in Bulgaria and helped draft the organizational statutes on which the first Bulgarian constitution was based. He acted also as Governor of Kharkov, Odessa, and Caucasus. According to a hand-written inscription on the back of a identical photograph, kept in Anastas Jovanović's album, the photo was taken by Iv. A.
